Pivoting in Practice.
What am I supposed to harvest from this?
Last week I had a migraine, I have them on occasion and this one was a struggle to get through.
It was rough. Definitely not ideal.
I had plenty of things I needed to do, I’m getting prepared to make a few business announcements by the end of the month so every moment in my routine counts.
Then this happens.
My initial thought went something like this:
“This is so annoying!”
Previously, I would have catastrophized the situation:
“This has ruined my day”
“I hate this”
“I’ve failed once again”
Shifting from a dramatic feeling to a fact is a much better frame of mind to be in. Though I’m still not where I want to be.
It can be hard to allow yourself to recognize progress or allow yourself a break in a season of high demand. This kind of thing doesn’t come naturally to us and takes a lot of self-compassion and training to bring around full circle.
So what did I harvest from this migraine?
A win!
My mindset isn’t exactly where I dreamed it would be, but it helped me recover and push through much easier than before.
I also harvested self-compassion, I allowed myself a break even when I had a bunch of work piled up and waiting for me.
I leveled up my pivoting.
There was a time in my life in which I guilted myself for everything. Doing too much, not doing enough, giving my all, deciding not to give anything, almost nothing about what I did could be ok. I found flaws in it all.
Imagine your life with a mindset that allows you to pivot rather than become a victim of circumstances. Imagine saying, “I’m not going to do this today” instead of guilting yourself for not making time for every little thing.
Wouldn’t it be so cool to allow yourself some time to refill your cup, and then follow through with what you were going to do after you are rested and rejuvenated?
I know it’s not easy.
But try to practice pivoting. Refuse to let guilt constantly beat you down.
